Rally to Ban Developer Campaign Contributions

On April 20, 2026 GAN organized a rally in support of Bill 23-26, proposed legislation to prohibit campaign contributions of developers with active business before the AA County Council.

Speakers included CE Steuart Pittman, Rushern Baker, prior CE of Prince Georges County, bill sponsor Lisa Rodvien, Sheila Glesmann, Chair of League of Women Voters, and candidates Matt Johnston and James Kitchin.  Both Johnston and Kitchin are utlilzing public funding of their campaigns and have not accepted developer contributions.

This was the first step in an effort to take back our government and stop developers and corporate intesests from their outsized influence in our political system.

In spite of the fact that more than two dozen citizens testified to the Council in person or online in unanamous support of the Bill, it was defeated by a vote of 5 - 2 without any discussion or justification by the council.  This is thought to reflect the dependence on campaign contributions by developers by the dissenting memberrs of the Council
